MOSAIC TRAINING MODULE "THE DARK FACTORY"
MOSAIC is highly ambitious EU project to strengthen the Arts & Crafts education in Europe and worldwide. Finnish woodworking company Wooden Oy is the only company partner in the project. Wooden will give its 30 years of experience in woodworking into the project. Wooden´s CEO and founder Mr Ola Kukkasniemi has spread years the idea of Digital Craftmanship; ”Because of the global situation, there will be industrial renaissance in Europe. War and ethical values are the reason for bigger movement where factories and workshops are returning to Europe. New furniture, fashion and other industry sectors are already rarher committed to produce their products in Europe. We are happy about it, but we need to be prepared for it. Less romantic thoughts about handmade products and history, more automation and we will be the winners! It is the year 2022 and we have all the modern technic. Let´s use it, let´s renew the Arts & Crafts sector!” said Mr Kukkasniemi.
MOSAIC Training Modules are innovative workshops for students. Training Modules are made in collaboration with the project patrners and companys around the world. Wooden tested how the idea of Training Modules are working in real life. Below you will find short description what was created by Wooden and what was the outcome. Just to mention, the first Training Module products are now a new Wooden OFFCUTS brand and for sale in the leading art museum in Finland, EMMA Museum of Modern Art. So just #craftyourexcellence !!!
Training Module ”The Dark Factory”
1. The product can be a piece on furniture, kitchen ware, for example a bowl like in this case. Design is made by students, but design is not so important in this modul, quality of the result is. Products must be designed so, that it can be made from industrial offcuts.
2. Students will design and produce holder where CNC machine is able to process the object without human touch. Process can be done from one or several sides. Change of the sides will be done by hand of course.
3. Students should be able to create sample holder for the machining process so that one piece at the time is in production. Process must be programmed so well that the result is a ready finished product. This is the first important task in this modul. Without the perfect result idea of the process is lost.
4. When quality of the process is so excellent that sanding or finishing is not needed, first part of the modul is done.
5. Second part is to create a holder for several objects. More is more in this chapter.
6. When holder for several objects is done and tested, production for the first set can be done.
7. When production for several objects at the same time with excellent finish is done, this modul is ready.
8. Production in the Dark Factory must be controlled in the beginning of course. Machines working alone during the night is a risk of course but at least in Finland electricity is much cheaper during the night. Therefore night production is the aim of the “Dark Factory”.
